A word of encouragement

This documentation is a record of my preparation for my church camp in June 2013
I am the only doctor in my church. I have been the church camp for the last few years. In June 2013 my church held a camp at Awana hotel at Genting highlands, Malaysia. It was a 4 day 3 night camp.  There were about 230 participants , ages ranging from young kids to elderly.

Roles and responsibilities

1. I was to attend to any medical needs arising from the camp. Church members who have chronic illness are expected to bring their own medications.

2. I am BCLS and AED trained. If need be I am to perform basic cardiac life support for cardiac arrest and airway obstruction. We did not have any AED machine and did not plan to have any.
3. I was assisted by a homemaker who was a staff nurse. She was familiar with the equipment and contents of the medical kit. Her BCLS has expired.

Medicine and Equipment

I divided my contents into 2 boxes . Each box cover is labeled with the contents for easy reference. Every morning, I would bring the boxes to the conference hall because of its central location to all other activities. Every night I will bring the boxes back to my hotel room because I may be called to attend to the sick. And indeed I have been called in my room a few times.

Emergency Evacuation

I had to do a little research on the possible hospitals where church members who fell seriously will could be treated. My Malaysian medical colleague recommended Universiti Malaya Medical Centre as the preferred hospital and Gleneagles as the alternative. Both hospitals were about more than an hour drive from the hotel depending on the traffic

Preferred hospital
Universiti Malaya Medical  Centre
51.3km  from Camp

Alternative
 Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre
41.7km from Camp

An encouragement

If you belong to a small church, very likely you will be the only doctor or nurse in the church. If you attend church regularly, and  I hope you do, your opinion on medical stuff will be keenly sought and you will be invited to help out in church activities. All churches need help in many ministries. But medical help is one special area where your profession is a necessity. Be glad that God has trained you to serve.

 Philippians 4:6-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
