To all who love God and medicine
Welcome to my website. I am a family physician working in a public primary health care institution. I was born and grew up in Singapore. After graduating from medicine in 1996, I took up family medicine traineeship and had been working in primary health care since 2001. I have a special interest in psychiatry and emergency care in a community setting.
Apart from doctoring, I am involved with a para church organization that works with undergraduate medical/dental/nursing students. Our mission is to help fulfil the Great Commission by winning, building and sending healthcare workers in the workplace. My family worship in a Bible Presbyterian church.
I love the Bible. I first completed reading the Bible when I was 18 years old. Since then, I have read it many more times. When I was a young Christian, and for many years, my spiritual life and my job were usually two separate silos. Sometimes medical & spiritual commitment overlapped like when I provide medical support for church camps or when I go for short medical mission trips. Bible verses that were meaningful at work were restricted to verses like Mark 12:31 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' in dealing with patients. Though many times I don't know my patients or love them. When I feel mentally exhausted, I try to claim on Isaiah 40:31 "those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
When I was a baby Christian, I was introduced to 4 spiritual laws. It was my first evangelistic tool. Law 1 says, Just as there are physical laws that govern the physical universe, so there are spiritual laws that govern my relationship with God. The next three laws focused on spiritual matters, then leading to an invitation to receive Christ. When I practice medicine, I am applying the physical laws God has made to govern the physical body. I began to realize in the later years of practice that God has placed great emphasis on our physical bodies. God, in the Bible, explained why he created physical bodies for us humans. And He gave us instructions on how we should take care & the do or don't with this great gift of His. Unfortunately, these laws are less explored and scattered throughout the Bible. God does not write the Bible like a product manual in sequential steps. I have also begun to understand our bodies are intimately linked to our spiritual side. God made us humans with both body and spirit so we may worship Him in spirit, have fellowship with others and interact with the world around us. Medicine divorced from God's teachings or ignoring the spirit, fails to be holistic for me.
In this website, I will write about the lessons I have learnt about the human body from my bible readings and from practising medicine. I believe the Bible is the infallible word of God and forms a fundamental foundation in healthcare. Hence my website is named Bible Based Medicine. The current trend of evidence based medicine is excellent and provides new light to traditional practices. But let science not usurp the word of God. God, our creator, is one we should seek to understand His creation.
